58 Ladies from 5 Choirs Sing at The Tower of London

On an unseasonally sunny day, Friday 31st October 2014, 58 ladies from 5 choirs – North London, Halton, South London, Brompton and Windsor – arrived at the Tower of London for our first official MWC performance at this iconic venue.

Established in 1066 the historic importance of the venue was not lost on the ladies, but it was the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation aka “The Poppies” which made the day even more meaningful for our members, for Military Wives Choirs to sing with a backdrop of poppies representing the United Kingdom and Commonwealth WW1 dead was a truly moving occasion.

We performed our first set in the wonderful setting of The Orchard with the stunning poppies as a backdrop. With very large visitor numbers that day it was then decided that to prevent any crowd injuries we would relocate to the Tower Green inside the tower itself which was a huge honour as this area is historically very significant. With a backdrop of medieval buildings, Tower Bridge and the ultra modern Shard building it was a magical setting for our second and third sets. Performing a suite of classic MWC songs – Stronger Together, Wherever You Are, Sing to name a few, and the very apt Vera Lynn and Tipperary medleys, we entertained the crowds for a large part of the day under the expert direction of North London MD Abigail Harris for the first two sets and Brompton’s Indre Olive for the final set. It was a truly memorable day which will remain with all of us. A real honour and a collaboration in the true spirit of Stronger Together.
