The impact of your support

A Home Away from Home

Already 15% of our network have been members of more than one choir as they have moved around with postings. They report the comfort and familiarity they experience in each choir thanks to the universal core repertoire and their fellow choir members, who understand their unique situation. This way, choir becomes a lifeline to them and their families. With some women not seeing their loved ones for up to nine months, the choirs become a vital support network providing a well-needed sense of belonging.

Helping with Change

Wives and partners of veterans tell us of the strength and support they receive from their choir membership, both to manage their transition and sometimes the longer-term challenges that come as part of the legacy and changing roles of their military lives.

Backed by Science

Don’t just take our word for it: it is scientifically proven that “group singing leads to a higher level of the hormone oxytocin, often called the ‘bonding hormone’ … [which] may play a part in the positive feelings of belonging which people can report when they sing together in a group” (Kreuz, 2014).

Relief for their Serving Relatives

Serving personnel tell us of the relief and confidence they feel, knowing that in their absence there is a support network for their loved ones. Thanks to the choirs, no one has to feel alone in the military community.

"Being a female in the forces is sometimes quite lonely as there are very few other ladies to hang out with or share hobbies with so you have to seek out things outside of work. MWC is a great opportunity to do something I love as well as hang out with other women who have a shared interest – I can let my hair down, both figuratively and literally!”

Far-Reaching Impact

Music both inside and outside the rehearsal room delivers these positive impacts to over 2,000 choir members, 48 weeks of the year. This is a staggering 221,000 hours of shared support each year.

In addition to this rehearsal time, all our choirs share their music with their local military community and the wider community, with over 800 performances being delivered by the network across 2018. In this way, our impact reaches everyone - even those who are not part of the military community are touched by what we do.
