Why join?

  • 1. You don’t have to have previous choral or vocal experience to join

“I had never sung in a choir before and I’m not the best but when we’re all singing together, it’s a lovely blend of voices so it doesn’t matter.”

The Military Wives Choirs is completely inclusive and open to any woman with a military connection – there are no auditions, and no previous singing experience is necessary.

  • 2. You can join a new community

“The Military Wives Choirs has enriched my life beyond measure and given me the most precious friends.”

Families of service personnel move around frequently and it can be tough to put down roots or make new friends. The Military Wives Choirs offer a fun and safe space, open to all women in the military community. If you are new to an area, choir can be a great way of getting to know like-minded, friendly women who can make you feel at home.

  • 3. You’ll get support from like-minded people who understand

“The ladies know what it’s like. You’ve basically got a second family and the love we share is strong. We become stronger together and that’s what our ethos is!”

The Military Wives Choirs gives you the chance to share experiences with those who understand the often unpredictable nature of Forces life. The choirs function as wider support networks for our members. There is singing, laughter and occasionally tears, but most of all there’s no need to explain - your fellow choir members just get it. Sing, share and support!

  • 4. You’ll grow in confidence through performance

“Singing at events is an amazing feeling - you are literally on cloud nine when you have finished a performance.”

The best thing about being in a choir is the fun and challenge you will find each week in your local rehearsals.  Alongside these rehearsals, choirs undertake local and sometimes national performances. Military Wives Choirs members often find that these performances make friendships grow and make them feel stronger together. Being a part of the Military Wives Choirs also means you have the chance to take part in special, sometimes once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, often in collaboration with other choirs across the network.

  • 5. If you move, you can stay part of the Military Wives Choirs network

“We’re on the move again this summer and because of the choir network I’m already in touch with the new choir, so I can start meeting people straight away and not worry about not knowing anyone.”

Life in the military community means that people may move to a completely new place at short notice. With 72 Military Wives Choirs across the UK and abroad singing a shared repertoire, you can join a new choir and instantly feel a level of familiarity.

  • 6. You can feel connected to your local community

“Our committees work really hard to integrate and work with the local community to give something back.”

The Military Wives Choirs often perform and develop close links with their local military and civilian communities, which can give members a great opportunity to get to know the wider community.

  • 7. Singing is scientifically proven to benefit your mental and physical health & wellbeing

“Singing as part of my choir has fantastic benefits to my health. I can honestly say I come away feeling great every time!”

Research shows that singing could have a long term benefit on your physical health. It reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and increases your endorphins (the wellbeing hormone), which can help your mental health. The sense of challenge, teamwork and achievement is beneficial in the same way as a team sport.

  • 8. You can learn new skills

Being part of a choir develops musical skills, such as listening, responding, theory and teamwork. Beyond this, each choir is run by a volunteer committee, which enables those who wish to gain experience of, for example, PR and interviewing, chairing and minuting meetings, management of your professional Musical Director, and other opportunities beyond music-making.

  • 9. You can grow in confidence

“Choir really boosts the confidence of a lot of choir members. It can get you out of your comfort zone which means you might be more likely to go for a new job or do something new in the rest of your life.”

The biggest step will be your decision to join a choir. Remember, every choir member has decided to join a choir and found friendship and support beyond their expectations. Take the next step and contact your local Military Wives Choir. The choir will be pleased to welcome you to your first rehearsal - they’ll even come knock on your door and take you along if you would like!

  • 10. You can take time for yourself

“Choir for me, means acceptance, time for myself and a great social life!”

Choir members are often very busy people, juggling all aspects of life sometimes single-handedly. The Military Wives Choirs is that fun and safe space where you can let your hair down, sing your heart out and take time for yourself out of a busy week.

Come along to a rehearsal near you – we would love for you to join us!
